Bevza at the Met Gala

Attending the Met Gala was not just a personal achievement for Bevza; it was a powerful statement of solidarity with her compatriots back home. As an acclaimed Ukrainian designer, her journey has been intertwined with the struggles and triumphs of her nation. By gracing the red carpet alongside fashion icons and cultural influencers, she elevated the profile of Ukrainian design and brought awareness to the strength of her country's creative community.

The significance of Bevza's presence at the Balenciaga table, seated alongside Demna, a fellow Eastern European designer, cannot be overstated. It exemplifies the power of solidarity within the fashion industry, transcending geographical boundaries and showcasing the interconnectedness of creative minds. It sends a powerful message of support to the people of Ukraine, demonstrating that they are not alone in their struggle. When reflecting back on her time with Demna, Bevza recounted how Demna told her stories about how he had to leave Georgia when Russia invaded his homeland, and about his time living in Odessa for a few years. Demna also told Bevza about his Zoom call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the two talked about the hoodie Demna designed for Balenciaga in collaboration with the non-profit, United24, to raise money for Ukraine.

At the Balenciaga table, Bevza wore one of her iconic BEVZA Seashell dresses along with a one-of-one cape made from thousands of hand-cut silk feathers. The cape, shaped like wings, was designed to symbolize hope peace in Ukraine and, as Bevza put it, “victory for my homeland.” Bevza paired it all with a Chanel bracelet (to tie in with the Lagerfeld theme of the event) as well as an egg-shaped BEVZA satin bag. The bag symbolized new life and a new beginning. Bevza later explained after the Gala that “these questions of hope and freedom and life are crucial for our homeland now - for every Ukrainian.”

Sitting alongside Bevza and Demna was Pasha Harulia, a Ukrainian model who both Bevza and Demna had worked with in the past. Pasha was dressed in BEVZA, wearing a dark navy blue mermaid dress - Bevza recounted that Pasha chose this dress because she is from Crimea and the seashell is part of Crimea’s emblem. Wearing this dress was intended to be a political statement, signaling that Crimea is a part of Ukraine. Pasha also wore a wheat spikelet necklace and earrings made in Kyiv in Ukraine a month prior to the Gala. The spikelets were specifically designed to be completely black, made in in recognition of the many miles of wheat fields in Ukraine that have been burned since the onset of the conflict.

At a time when her homeland of Ukraine is grappling with the ongoing Russian invasion, Bevza's participation in such a prestigious event brought global attention to her talent and highlighted the resilience of the Ukrainian people. As Bevza said her goodbyes to everyone at the table, Demna gave her a hug and said, “Slava Ukraini” - Glory to Ukraine.
