BUTT 32 Hot Off the Press

Founded in 2001 by Dutch journalist Gert Jonkers and art director Joe van Bennekom, BUTT magazine became a cornerstone of queer media in the early aughts for its unapologetic and shameless portrayal of gay and queer sexuality. Historically marketed for gay men, the bi-annual publication featured interviews, articles, and advertisements and illuminated trends and lifestyles within the homosexual and queer community. In 2011, BUTT magazine published its final print issue to the dismay of those who came to appreciate its quirky, no-frills attitude. By that time, a global community of readers had grown around the subversive magazine, looking to its pages and website for creative connection and good sex.

In Spring of last year — when many were still crying out for inclusivity, proximity and closeness after a bout of pandemic-induced loneliness — BUTT Magazine returned to print with a relaunch backed by Bottega Veneta as the publications' exclusive advertiser. The new 100-page issue was released by the fashion house on March 3rd and swiftly returned to its former glory. Granted, it was a different world to return to, one where all queer identities are considered and given space to negotiate for representation. BUTT once again became a physical record and space for stories often rendered invisible.

This past Friday, the magazine launched their 32nd issue featuring interviews with writer Eileen Myles who talks the sexual side of poetry with Brontez Purnell, sex professional Sharok who details his passion for pigeons, politics and porn with Phillip Picardi, and Akeem Smith, "the enfant terrible of New York fashion," who sits in conversation with Zak Stone.
